Loft Insulation
Loft insulation is a simple and effective way to reduce your heating bills and improve heat efficiency in your home. Loft insulation is effective for at least 40 years, and it will pay for itself over and over again in that time. It has huge environmental benefits and helps you reduce your home’s carbon footprint. That’s because the better insulated your home is, the more efficient your heating system will be, thus lowering your carbon foot print.

Using Insulation Effectively
Loft Insulation works by creating a barrier to the hot air which is rising from the lower levels of your house towards the roof. In the UK the minimum Government recommended insulation depth is 270mm (11”) and many houses now have up to 400mm. That’s much higher than your loft joists, which are generally only 100mm or less. Insulation works through the trapped air inside it, hence, it is important not to squash it so that it works effectively.
Research from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has shown that by squashing down loft insulation, for example under storage boxes, homeowners almost halve its performance. In addition, according to the Energy Saving Trust, a quarter of a home's heat is lost through an un-insulated roof. Hence, having loft insulation in your home is essential for improving heat efficiency. Still, it is important not to squash it with belongings.

Boarding Over your Loft Insulation
As mentioned above, squashing insulation halves its effectiveness, since it works by trapping air and being fluffy so it is important not to place belongings on top of it. If you still need to use your loft for storage you need ensure that you use correct boarding. Do not just place loft boards directly on top of the loft insulation as this will squash it down and prevent adequate ventilation and air flow. This can lead to damp and condensation issues and will reduce the efficiency of the insulation. That's why we use LoftZone Storefloor. By adding LoftZone Raised Loft floor, you can protect your insulation from being squashed, while providing additional space and storage to your loft. This supporting structure creates a very strong and safe platform that raises the floor above the loft insulation and allows a gap for air flow and ventilation.
